Messages and Calendar of Events & Activities - Week of June 15
Dear Island Trees School Community,
Please see the messages, as well as the calendar of events & activities below:
Important Parent Information Regarding Snapchat and Vaping Products
Earlier this week, I attended a meeting of the Levittown Drug-Free Coalition that included representatives from the Nassau County Police Department. During the meeting, officers discussed an ongoing investigation involving the use of Snapchat to facilitate the sale of vaping devices and vape products among local youth in the Levittown area.
The police shared that many of the Snapchat group conversations associated with these activities involve coded language and terminology that can be difficult for adults to understand. They advised that if parents review their child's phone and encounter group chats or conversations that appear suspicious or contain language they cannot decipher, they should consider having their child leave those chats and block future access to them.
The Nassau County Police Department emphasized that Snapchat has become a significant communication platform for the purchase and sale of illicit drugs and vaping products among adolescents in Nassau County. They encouraged school districts and community organizations to share this information with parents and guardians so they can remain vigilant and have ongoing conversations with their children about responsible and safe social media use.
We appreciate your partnership in helping to keep our students safe both in school and online.
Summer is Almost Here
Can you believe the end of the school year is already here? The days are getting longer -- or at least until June 21st -- and summer vacation is just around the corner! While we all look forward to sunny days and time off, we also know that long breaks can sometimes erode student reading and math skills.
That’s why we encourage students to make weekly visits to the public library -- and for our elementary students, to take full advantage of the fun reading incentives offered there. Many schools also provide summer reading lists to help spark ideas and keep young minds engaged.
At the secondary level, our teachers have put together summer assignments to help students prepare for the next school year. These activities are designed to keep skills sharp and minds engaged.
With college readiness standards rising across the nation, it’s more important than ever that students stay connected to their learning -- even during summer fun. A little focus now goes a long way in setting them up for success in the months ahead!
Summertime College Visits
Summer is an excellent time for families of high school students to visit colleges. With students away for the summer, campuses often offer guided tours that give prospective students and their families an opportunity to explore the grounds, facilities, residence halls, and other important areas of the campus.
College visits can help students determine what type of environment feels right for them. Some students prefer an urban campus, while others are drawn to suburban or rural settings. Likewise, visiting both large universities and smaller colleges can help narrow choices and make the college search process more manageable.
During a campus visit, admissions representatives and tour guides often share valuable information about academics, student activities, traditions, dining options, and campus culture. These firsthand experiences can provide insights that are difficult to gain from websites or brochures.
One additional tip: whenever possible, register in advance for your visit. Many colleges track what is known as “demonstrated interest,” which reflects a student’s engagement with the institution. While policies vary from school to school, attending an official campus tour, information session, or admissions event may be considered as part of the admissions process.
If your family has the opportunity to take a few college visits this summer, it can be a worthwhile investment of time.
