The Island Trees School District is proud of its
fine and performing arts programs. Music and Art
education is designed to foster an understanding and
appreciation of the arts while addressing the N.Y.S.
Learning Standards. Students will create, perform and
participate in the arts, know and use arts materials and
resources, respond to and analyze works of art, and
understand the cultural dimensions and contributions of
the arts. These aims are met through participation in a
performing group (band, orchestra, chorus), general
music, or art classes.
Instrumental music and chorus is offered
beginning in the 4th grade. The music and art program
provides sequential instruction for all K-7 students,
with elective offerings for students grade 7-12.
Students may choose from a variety of ability-based
vocal and instrumental classes, including orchestras,
concert and marching bands, jazz ensembles (instrumental
and vocal), concert and show choirs.
Art electives include drawing, painting,
photography, 3-dimensional design, advertising design,
fashion design and graphic arts.
In addition, there are opportunities to
perform in theatrical productions at the middle and high
school.
"Whoever neglects the arts when he is young
has lost the past and is dead to the future." -
