G.O.A.L. Advisory Program

Advisory consists of 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th graders integrated into a group of about 12 to 14 students and an adult advocate. The G.O.A.L. advisory period begins the day and takes the place of homeroom on a daily basis. Every other week there will be a G.O.A.L. extended period of 30 minutes.

This child-centered philosophy forms the framework for our middle level building, but especially our G.O.A.L. program. Research has shown that pre-adolescents will thrive on the understanding attention of a caring adult for at least a few minutes each day.

Over the weeks an advisor develops a thorough knowledge of his/her advisees through group activities and discussions, individual conferences, comments from advisees' teachers, academic and discipline records and parent contacts. As an outgrowth of this close personal relationship, advisors are able to expose, deal with, and often prevent many of the common academic, social and discipline problems that plague the typical middle school student.

In addition, every day, students have access to a nurturing, supportive adult in a relaxed, non-academic setting. G.O.A.L. creates a forum for discussion, venting, listening, exchanging, and valuing which are integral to raising self-esteem, personal growth and development.
