Objective:
To create a supportive and caring environment in which
one adult and a small group of students have an
opportunity to interact on a daily basis for academic
guidance and support, social and emotional learning,
recognition, and activities that promote character
education.
Purpose:
The purpose of an advisory program is for a student to
have an adult who serves as the child’s advocate, to
guarantee that every pupil belongs to a peer group, to
help every student find ways to be successful, and to
promote communication between home and school.
Goals:
* To develop
a close personal relationship with students and deal
with and prevent many of the common academic, social and
emotional problems that the typical middle school
student may face.
* To create a
forum for discussion, listening, exchanging, valuing
etc. all of which are an integral part of growth and
development.
* To create a
relaxed but structured, non-academic setting for
students to have access to a nurturing and supportive
adult.
* To create a time for
organization, preparation for the day, social
interaction among all grade levels, one-on-one advisory,
attendance taking and distribution/discussion of
important information such as interim reports and report
cards.
* To advise new 5th grade students to the
building, for teachers to act as a mentor to all
students in the advisory, to let them know they can
share problems/issues they might be experiencing, and to
help get organized at beginning of school.
Process:
* There will be 47 advisory groups with students being
divided evenly (average of 15.5 students in an
advisory). During the summer, the guidance counselors
will be assigning students to advisories. Students will
receive their assigned advisory in Mid-August of 2011.
* Each month the advisory calendar will be posted on the
Memorial Middle School website highlighting the
scheduled activities, events, and discussion topics.
* Advisors will be coordinating the scheduled monthly
activities. In addition, teachers will be planning
character education activities to promote self-esteem,
recognition, and school pride.
