First grade students in Stokes School studied bats as a scientific tie-in to Halloween.
Along with books such as Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats
by Ann Earle and Fantastic Bats by Justin McCory Martin,
it is the use of the Smart Board and virtual
field trip web sites that truly bring the understanding of these
unique animals into the lives of the students!
This year, Mrs. Mitchell's class used the Smart Board and the
computer lab to visit Carlsbad Caverns National Park, the home
of thousands of bats, on a virtual field trip. The site provides
actual video of the bats exiting their caves at night along with
close-up photographs of the many different types of bats found
there. In addition through sound manipulation, the sounds made
during echolocation could also be heard. The children became bat
experts quickly as they used this hands-on technology to experience
the magic of this animal.
