THE ISLAND TREES ACADEMIC TEAM TAKES THEIR GAME FROM LONG ISLAND TO DIXIE

June 6, 2018

After finishing the spring in strong fashion with a fourth overall finish among Varsity teams in the Long Island Regional Quiz Bowl and by finishing third in the inaugural Bard Bowl, the Island Trees Academic Team wrapped up their fine year by competing in the National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT) High School National Championship in Atlanta and the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE) National Scholastic Tournament in Reston, Virginia.

Among a 350-team field in Atlanta, the Island Trees squad, comprised of seniors Kenneth Chan and Jonathan Garcia and Juniors David Wendt, Thomas Zamroz, and Joshua Kim, spent their Memorial Day weekend among some of the best and biggest Quiz Bowl teams in the nation. Their efforts did not go unnoticed as they finished within the top one-third of those competing, tying for 77th place nationwide. In Atlanta, David Wendt was a force to be reckoned with as he finished 50th among the 1,665 participants in individual scoring.

The boys then took the show on the road the next weekend to Reston, Virginia, where in the shadows of the Nation's Capital the Island Trees squad faced a much smaller field of seasoned teams in the PACE National Scholastic Tournament. After 18 grueling matches which saw Island Trees face multiple challenges, the boys were rewarded for their efforts by finishing second in the Small School Division of national schools participating. David Wendt continued his stellar play by finishing 40th among the 403 individuals participating in the preliminaries, placing him in the top ten percent of the field. In the playoff rounds, David did even better, finishing 17th among the 403 players to finish in the top four percent of the field.

These tournaments wrap up what was a fine year of expanded competition for the Island Trees Academic Team. We hope that this continues to build momentum for our Quiz Bowl team as we continue to look for new members to join each year, especially from the new crop of students coming into the ninth grade next year at Island Trees High School. With that, we hope the boys get some rest and that all of you have a great summer ahead! Quiz Bowl awaits Island Trees again in the fall of 2018!
