Island Trees Mid-Year Track & Field Review

The Island Trees Track & Field program got off to another great start this season.  The boys are currently 9 & 3, while the girls are 10 & 2.  This places both teams among the leaders of their respective divisions. Recently the teams did quite well at the Baldwin Frosh/Soph and the Cougar Invitational.

We were especially looking towards the Baldwin Frosh/Soph Invitational, since 41 out of our 64 competitors happen to be either a freshmen or a sophomores. This event took place on April 19th. Nicholette LoMonte, Gianna McGowan, Cara Duffy, Stephen Groenert, Justin Ortiz, all came in first place in their respective events. Claudia Rodriguez, Lawson Hohmann, Alyssa Sandez, Johnny Martinez, and Natalia Bonilla all earned second place finishes. The team earned over twenty medals at this meet. This was quite an accomplishment considering that we went up against schools that included such Track & field powerhouses as Baldwin and Uniondale.

On April 21st, the team made their way to Bellmore JFK for the prestigious Cougar Invitational. Justin Ortiz and Gianna McGowan (2x's) both earned Gold, while Cara Duffy, Matt Zerbarini, and Tara Donahue (2x's) all placed in the top three.

On April 24th, at the Lynbrook field, all-state Cathryn Kramer made her return to high jumping. Cathryn had been out with a basketball season shoulder injury season. She picked up right where she left off, jumping over 5 feet. This now puts her first in our county classification, and first in our state qualifiers. Others so far leading the way for States include:

Courtney Martin (high hurdles & intermediate hurdles)

Tara Donahue (discus)

Tommy Zamroz (shot put)

Some that are close include:

Lawson Hohmann (sprints)

Yoonho Choi (discus)

Justin Ortiz (distance)

Cara Duffy (distance)

Gianna McGowan (sprints)

Brenna Glover (sprints)
