The Island Trees Academic Team took their act to another local tournament this past weekend at Bard High School Early College in lower Manhattan to participate in the inaugural BardBowl. What happened was the result of a lot of hard work and quick fingers at the buzzer as Island Trees finished third of 28 teams in the competition for its best tournament finish of the 2017-18 season. As a result, the QuizDawgs qualified for national competitions this year for the National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT) and the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE), which are the leading competitive Quiz Bowl organizations in the United States.
Island Trees swept through the preliminary rounds this past weekend with five wins against no losses, and finished the tournament with an overall 9-2 record.
Junior Captain David Wendt continued to rise in the local Quiz Bowl ranks as one of the great competitors in the New York tri-state area, finishing third among all individual players at BardBowl I while averaging 84 points per game. Senior Jonathan Garcia also finished in the top third of all individuals with an average just over 32 points per match. Their leadership this season, along with fellow juniors Thomas Zamroz and Joshua Kim, have led to a very successful run on the local academic team circuit. The team has developed a great work ethic, rising from early yet meaningful losses to becoming a team to beat against local high school powers North Babylon, High Technology (NJ), Bard, Great Neck South, Hunter College, Stuyvesant, and Valley Stream South.
The Bulldogs face off against crosstown rival MacArthur in the Long Island Regional Quiz Bowl this coming Valentine's Day in a battle for sole possession of first place in the Eastern Nassau division, which will be a warmup for next weekend's final leg of the Columbia Cup in Manhattan.Continue to follow the successes of this year's IT Academic Team on Twitter at @ITQuizBowl or on Mr. Medeiros' new Google site (https://sites.google.com/islandtrees.net/medeiros/home) for more information.
