Island Trees High School Winter Track off to a Quick Start!
Last Thursday, 11/30/2017, the Bulldogs had a great start to their season. They competed against 18 teams at their first league meet at Saint Anthony's High School. Teams such as Uniondale, Freeport, Baldwin, and Manhasset were among their competition. Gianna McGowan truly shined by winning the 55 meter pprint, and coming in 3rd in the 300 meter dash. Gianna, who is a 9th grader, was 14th in the State last year during the Spring season. In addition, Rebecca Gersbeck (shotput) and Cara Duffy (600 & 1500 meter) both earned silver medals. Courtney Martin (55 high hurdles & long jump), Johnny Martinez (long jump), Justin Ortiz (3200 meter), and Juan Ivaldy (55 meter) also had high level performances.
Subsequently, on Saturday, 12/02/2017, the Winter Track and Field Team team traveled to Farmingdale High School for the Walt Brem Invitational. Division, East Meadow, Locust Valley, East Meadow, West Hempstead, and Farmingdale were among the dozen-plus schools that competed. Our distance runners, coached by Coach Sarah Lambert, excelled with 1st place victories by Cara Duffy, Justin Ortiz, and Tara Donahue. Cara Duffy and Justin Ortiz each won two events (the 600 meter and the mile run for Cara, and the 1000 meter and the 2 mile run for Justin), and Tara Donahue won the Gold Medal in the 1000 meter run.
Finally, our long jumpers and Hurdlers, coached by Coach Will Frohnhoefer, also had a great outing. Nicolette LoMonte, an 8th grader, had an outstanding day by placing within the top 5 in both the high hurdles and in the long jump. 9th graders John Martinez and Juan Ivaldy also performed well in the long jump competition. Brandon Hernandez (600 meter), Nick Basile (shotput), Alyssa Mayo (shotput), Brandon Marmolejos (shotput), and Olivia Christiano (hurdles) all had an exceptional day, as well.
Our young team is looking forward to their upcoming competitions, including ones in Staten Island and Manhattan.
