25th Reunion of the First Long Island Champions

Homecoming weekend will include a celebration of the Island Trees 1992 football team. The "DAWGS" who won the first ever Long Island championship  went 10 and 1 that year, including playoff wins over Oyster Bay, Manhasset, and Mt Sinai. The game against Mt. Sinai was especially triumphant since not only was it Long Island's first Championship game, but it actually went to overtime. The Nassau County "DAWGS" ended up playing the Suffolk Champions, Mt. Sinai Mustangs.
Interestingly, the game was a defensive battle that ended in a scoreless tie. Then came overtime. Our offense had the first possession and the coaches put sophomore backup quarterback Joe Kaiser into the game. The DAWGS scored both a touchdown and a two point conversion. The Mustangs then had the ball. Due to a penalty, they ended up having 2nd and goal from the 1 inch line. Yes, the one inch line.  Our Island Trees DAWGS proceeded to stop Mt. Sinai three straight times for the victory and the Long Island championship.
The team was led by its captains: Mike Duggan, Stu Wexler, Phil Pierro, and Carmine Apuzzo. Mike Duggan (for only the second time in Island Trees football history) earned "All Long Island" status.  Other key members included: Doug Reitzen, AJ. Gravina, Gerry Papadatos, Larry Babino, Mike Bonsignore, Will Spoering, Brian Champion, Mike Hossein Joe Lucas and Andreas Kaneris. The special teams were led by Chris Neglia. The varsity head coach was Bob Daly who called the offensive plays.  Joe Manna was the line coach and defensive coordinator while Mike Guercio was in charge of running backs and linebackers.  Anthony Dattero and Doug Rigo were the JV coaches.
The 1992 championship team will be honored at half-time on Saturday, September 23, 2017.  1:30 p.m. game-time.
