Dear
Island Trees School Community,
Each year students in the local area compete in a
contest sponsored by New York State Senator Kemp
Hannon entitled, “There ought to be a Law.”
Students in the sixth grade work with their social
studies teachers to brainstorm issues that could be
resolved by creating laws. The entries are
submitted and winners of the contest are honored in
the spring.
This year State Senator Hannon decided to film a
documentary about the process of a bill becoming a
law and asked if he could teach this lesson to a
classroom of middle school students. On Friday,
February 5, 2010, State Senator Kemp Hannon visited
Mr. Jeffrey Esposito’s sixth grade social studies
class and engaged the students in a discussion about
the legislative process and how a local issue could
become a law. During the presentation, students
were encouraged to ask questions to Senator Hannon
and several pupils were asked to give their opinions
about the process. Senator Hannon’s presentation
was filmed by Cablevision and the documentary will
air on television in early March. The presentation
was coordinated by Ms. Danielle Mazzo, MMS social
studies chairperson and Mr. Jeffrey Esposito, sixth
grade social studies teacher.
Featured in the photographs are State Senator Kemp
Hannon, Mr. Esposito, and students from his sixth
grade social studies class.
Sincerely,
Roger Bloom
